Bermuda Gold Cup 2002 - America`s Cup-Style Match Racing at its Best |
HAMILTON, BERMUDA-(8-10-2002) While the world monitors the America’
s Cup and its current “goings on” in New Zealand, Bermuda will be sharing
with spectators and sailing enthusiasts its own version of America’s
Cup-style match racing when racing for the Bermuda Gold Cup comes to
Hamilton Harbour from October 12-20. In fact, this annual display of
maritime might, hosted for 54 years by the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club,
historically has attracted as many America’s Cup skippers as it has
up-and-coming sailors. The contest is a ladder-like series that pares down
24 teams, both seeded and unseeded, to only two for the ultimate one-on-one
match of wits and skill. The Holy Grail in this competition is not only the
ornate King Edward VII Gold Cup Trophy but also the glory of winning the
lion’s share of $65,000 in prize money.
The racing for the Bermuda Gold Cup is one of nine events in eight countries
on the Swedish Match Tour 2002-03. Sailed in traditional 33-foot
International One Design sloops on short windward-leeward courses, the
racing features tight courses that can take teams up to the bows of cruise
ships moored along the city’s edge and within meters of large crowds that
traditionally gather shore-side for this event. With live commentary from
the race course and plenty of intrigue as tension mounts among teams
progressing through the rounds, you can’t get any closer to America’s
Cup-style excitement without going to New Zealand!
